Assessment in Covid19 times: crisis, opportunity or both?

As a result of Covid19 pandemic, educators quickly adapted to teaching virtually. Yet, how can practitioners be sure students are learning?

During this talk, presenter will refer to essential must do's of formative and summative assessment during remote teaching, focusing on skill acquisition and academic progress. Participants’ take-away will include tips to monitor students’ academic achievement under at-home learning conditions.

SESSION ABSTRACT

As schools around the world faced closures due to the Covid19 pandemic, educators adapted their teaching to virtual settings overnight. Yet, under these unprecedented circumstances, there is still one essential question that needs to be answered: how can practitioners better find out what students are learning? The objective of this talk will be to underpin key issues of facing assessment in this “new normal”.

Good assessment is a way to obtain information for teachers to promote a better acquisition skills and content. During this talk, the presenter will refer to essential must-do's of formative and summative assessment which need to be adapted, to be later implemented in emergency remote teaching. Focus will be made on student readiness, skill acquisition and academic progress by providing adapted tools for distance teaching. Apps as well as digital techniques which can be carried out virtually will be presented, discussed and tried out, for attendees to experience first hand.

Participants concrete take-away will include tips to monitor students’ academic achievement under at-home learning conditions, which will be of great use

DĂ©bora NACAMULI KLEBS is a passionate teacher, teacher trainer and coach, supporter of high-quality professional development and mentoring, who has been lecturing on ELT Methodology in teacher training institutions for the last 25 years. She has authored and co-authored articles on the field and is a presenter both nationally and internationally. She is a current board member of Argentina Tesol.
