Augmenting learning opportunities for teaching pronunciation and speaking skills
The generalization of communication apps such as WhatsApp has provided a unique opportunity for English language teaching and learning expanding the English lesson experience far beyond the realms of the physical classroom. This talk aims to reflect and discuss different scenarios to develop pronunciation and speaking skills outside of the classroom highlighting possibilities to overcome current limitations.
The session will begin by reflecting on the role of communication apps such as WhatsApp highlighting research on its social and educational implications. Afterwards, the talk will consider common hardships regarding speaking and pronunciations skills, especially when teaching larger classes. Later, these two aspects will be brought together to share how apps can be introduced within the English classroom context in order to expand the English lesson experience beyond the limitations of the physical classroom. Specific activities will be presented in the session in order to highlight possible scenarios to develop pronunciation and speaking skills outside of the classroom highlighting different contexts to overcome current limitations. The session will end with a Q&A segment.
Carlos Lindade is a Portuguese Canadian teacher involved in teacher training and writing course material for Portuguese EFL students. He is currently a PhD student in Advanced English Studies in the University of Vigo.
